Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.

Letter of Introduction

My name is Chelsea Gentry, and I have just completed my junior year at Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana. I am a History major and am completing a minor in Theological Studies. I will graduate in May 2014. My hometown is Aurora, Indiana and I plan to teach in the tri-state area after graduating. The classes that I have taken through the Hanover College History Department include: Order and Change, The West: Ancient to Medieval, French Revolution and Napoleon, American Colonial History, Nazi Germany, Studies in American Cultural History: The Western Hero, History of Christianity, Twentieth Century America and Your Family, American Women's History, American Countercultures and Historical Research. Also pertaining to history and/or education I have taken: Modern World Politics, an introductory Sociology course, Basic Psychology and Childhood and Adolescent Psychology.
I am the Student Senate representative and Advertising/Media executive for the Indiana Student Education Association (ISEA) chapter on Hanover’s campus. I am a mentor assistant in a class called Hanover 101, which is a seminar for first-year college students who are struggling or worry about struggling. I am a writing tutor and a Senior Tutor in my college’s Learning Center facility. I was also recently elected to serve on the Faculty Evaluation Committee for the College. All of these positions have given me experience in leadership roles. Additionally to these activities, I am in BASIC (Brothers and Sisters in Christ) here on campus. I have participated in the dance team, a mentoring program for seventh graders, a tutoring program in the local school district and a distance mentoring program called GearUp! through Skype. I enjoy participating in campus activities and hope to carry that over to your school district and be an active member of your school community. I would love to be involved with clubs like I have listed above as well as an FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America) program, NJHS (National Junior Honor Society), cheerleading, an equal rights club, a book club program or a history club program at your school. To be a part of your school community, I would be willing to stay after class to help tutor students who may need extra help with social studies, writing, organization, college advising and/or study skills. If there are other activities that I would be qualified to participate in, I would love to learn about those as well!
Besides loving social studies, I believe I have other valuable experiences to share with students. During my time in college I have become very interested in traveling the world, something that I never thought I could afford to do. I believe that I could bring excitement about this to your students with the experiences I can share about both Italy (very much a beautiful and luxurious country) and Haiti (a country where the primary concerns are survival). Both of these experiences have allowed me to learn about a different culture and people around the world. Should any students show interest in world travel, mission work or study trips, I would gladly assist them in any capacity that I could. I can also prove to them that you do not have to be a rich person to experience the world.
I would really love to be a part of your school community and would sincerely appreciate the opportunity to do so. If you or your social studies faculty has any questions at all you can contact me through the contact form on this website.
Thank You for Your Time and Consideration,
